A 2008 review of bear attacks in Alaska from 1985–2006 found that bear spray stopped a bear’s aggressiveness in 92% of cases. Further, 98% of persons using bear spray in close-range encounters escaped uninjured.[Bear Spray]
The effectiveness of bear spray depends on the situation and circumstances of the attack. Tom Smith of Brigham Young University said, “No bear spray has ever been reported to kill a bear. We believe that widespread use of bear spray will promote human safety and bear conservation.”
Bears do not attack people every day. But it only takes one attack to change a life forever. Anyone who spends time outdoors in bear country is taking a risk. Reduce the risk of attack by carrying bear spray.
What Bear Repellent Does
Guard Alaska bear spray we carry uses oleoresin capsicum as the active ingredient. The EPA regulates the capsicum used as an animal repellent.
When used, bear spray irritates the eyes, nose, and lungs of attacking bears. It also causes swelling in certain membranes. Bears experience a painful burning sensation and a temporary loss of sight. Restricted breathing is also a temporary reaction to the spray.
Please understand that this is a non-lethal product, so it does no long-term harm to an exposed bear. Pepper spray for human beings has the same purpose as bear spray. The attacker will leave you alone. The bear spray effects will eventually wear off, leaving the bear to resume life as normal.
